Wind is considered severe and therefore dangerous when average speeds reach 80 km/h and gusts reach 100 km/h inland. However, this threshold varies by region; it is higher, for example, in coastal areas and south-eastern France.
The term “storm” applies to winds reaching 89 km/h (force 10 on the Beaufort scale). The highest wind speed recorded in Cannes was 119 km/h on 30 January 2019.
