Cannes' Creative Economy

The "Cannes On Air" project is the City Council's initiative to promote the creation of a major audiovisual hub in Cannes

The Festival du Film, the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, MIPTV, MIPCOM, Midem and CANNESERIES bring together the most prestigious audiovisual experts in an exceptional location with state-of-the-art facilities.

In this context, Cannes City Council is developing the audiovisual sector with one clear objective: To equip the city with everything required for creating audiovisual content, producing an economic asset and market opportunity.

INTRODUCING CANNES ON AIR

« Cannes On Air » it's…

Cannes Bastide Rouge: a centre of excellence dedicated to the creative and cultural industries

A new centre of excellence dedicated to the cultural and creative industries. A Cannes City Council project in partnership with the Agglomération Cannes Lérins and the Université Côte d’Azur.

University Campus Georges Méliès and student residence Nouvelle Vague

Inaugurated in October 2021, the Georges Méliès university campus, located at the Cannes Bastide Rouge site in La Bocca, can accommodate over 1,200 students. It is dedicated to training for professions in writing, visual arts, sound, journalism, cinema, and television series.

In 2022, the City Council also established the "Nouvelle Vague" student residence in La Bocca, comprising 172 units situated near high-quality sports and leisure facilities (Piscine Grand Bleu, Cannes Garden Tennis Club, Palais des Victoires, cycle paths, and high-service-level bus routes…).

Bastide Rouge: business hub and audiovisual studios

Companies in the creative and cultural industries sector can be housed and supported at several stages of their development within two buildings:

  • The startup incubator was launched in 2014 with a surface area of 600 m2 and 2,000 m2 of
garden space for use as an event venue
  • The business hub, accommodating up to 100 entrepreneurs and project leaders, is located in the same building as the university campus, with a surface area of 2,020 m2

The businesses concerned benefit from tailored support at every stage of their development. They receive assistance with their establishment, access to funding (notably through Business Angels), support for student entrepreneurship, professional audiovisual equipment, as well as a vibrant programme of events and networking opportunities.

The studios at Cannes Bastide Rouge, at the heart of the new centre of excellence for the creative economy and visual professions, provide professionals with high-end equipment for creation, recording, post-production and projection of audiovisual content.

Ideally located at the entrance to Cannes and near the sea, the Bastide Rouge studios are easily accessible and just 30 minutes from Nice Côte d’Azur international airport.

Cineum Cannes multiplex cinema

Designed by the famous architect Rudy Ricciotti, with 12 screens, 2,450 seats and high-tech equipment, the Cineum Cannes multiplex cinema, located near the Georges Méliès university campus and the CréÀCannes business incubator, provides Cannes with a venue that lives up to the city's reputation as a "City of Cinema", thanks to its famous Film Festival.

Artistic and creative residencies

Cannes fosters artistic and audiovisual creation through screenwriting residencies for series and feature films, artist studios at the Suquet des Artistes, and residencies on the Île Sainte-Marguerite hosting photographers and visual artists.

Filming production

Among the other Cannes On Air projects is the establishment of film studios on the AnsaldoBreda site, scheduled for 2028.

The Musée International du Cinéma et du Festival de Cannes

A cultural facility without parallel in France or worldwide (scheduled for 2030)

Developed in close collaboration with the French State, the Région Sud, the Alpes-Maritimes Department, the Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée, the Festival de Cannes, the Cinémathèque française and leading figures in the French, European, and international audiovisual industries.

This landmark facility will feature a bold and emblematic architectural gesture, commensurate with its cultural, scientific and touristic ambition and global stature.

A bold ambition: to offer visitors a unique experience

The aim is to provide France with a cultural, educational and touristic facility that offers an entirely new immersive approach, encouraging active visitor engagement by placing them at the heart of the creative, production and distribution process of a cinematic work.

A permanent exhibition will also showcase the history of cinema through the prestigious collections of the Cinémathèque française, and a dedicated space will honour the Festival de Cannes.
