Flooding

Understanding the nature of the Risk

Flooding is caused by rivers overflowing, urban surface water runoff and coastal inundation.

It is most often caused by Mediterranean storm episodes, which occur when warm, moist and unstable air moves northwards from the Mediterranean, potentially triggering severe thunderstorms that can remain stationary. These episodes are particularly common in autumn, when the sea is at its warmest, leading to high levels of evaporation.

What to do

Before a flood: if your home is in a flood-prone area

  • Check whether your home is in a flood-prone area
  • Turn off the electricity and gas supplies, provided you can do so safely (locate your circuit breaker)
  • Move your belongings above potential flood levels and locate your emergency kit

During a flood: keep yourself safe

  • Move to higher ground or take shelter upstairs
  • Stay away from rivers and streams
  • Avoid travelling on foot or by car
  • Do not enter basements or underground car parks
  • Stay informed and monitor rising water levels

After a flood: if your property has been flooded

  • Before drinking tap water, check with the Town Hall that it is safe to drink
  • Ask the Town Hall what steps to take before returning to your home
  • Notify your insurer of the damage. The Town Hall can help you with the process
  • Clean and disinfect flooded rooms
  • Ventilate and heat your home as soon as possible

Prepare your 72-hour emergency kit

The 72-Hour Emergency Kit

Power cuts, disruptions to gas and running water supplies, impassable roads… when a major disaster strikes, the first 72 hours are often the most challenging. Preparing this kit in advance will help you stay at home with greater peace of mind while waiting for help to arrive. It will also be invaluable if you need to leave at short notice.

Here is what to include in your kit:

  • a battery-powered radio (with spare batteries) to follow instructions from the authorities
  • medications
  • a first aid kit (antiseptic, plasters, sterile dressings…)
  • basic tools (a multi-tool, tin opener…)
  • non-perishable food that requires no cooking (tinned food, jars of baby food, pet food…)
  • warm clothing and an emergency blanket
  • a torch (with spare batteries), candles, a lighter or matches
  • a mobile phone charger
  • a spare pair of prescription glasses
  • cash (cash machines may be out of service)
  • plenty of bottled drinking water (6 litres per person)
  • photocopies of essential documents in a waterproof pouch (identity card, prescriptions…)
  • spare house and car keys
  • games to pass the time.

Keep the bag somewhere easily accessible.
Check the contents of your kit once a year, particularly the expiry dates of medication and food. Replace the batteries too.

Remember to replenish your kit after use!
