The City of Cannes has long been connected to other cities throughout the world in terms of experimentation and joint projects. It would also like to develop innovative projects with other countries so as to share its knowledge and cultural resources.

Joint cross-disciplinary educational projects and shared creative residencies

  • Los Angeles and Berlin: The International Storytelling Chair in collaboration with the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), a leading school for film and the Berlin School (for cinema).
  • San Francisco: Design Thinking, an initiative in partnership with Stanford University
  • United Kingdom: Audiovisual and Screenplay projects with the London Film School
  • Poland: Audiovisual and Screenplay projects with the LODZ Film School
  • Romania: Audiovisual and Screenplay projects with the MIDPOINT institute
  • Berlin: Audiovisual and Screenplay projects with Serial Eyes
  • Italy: Audiovisual and Screenplay projects with the "Scuola Holden"
  • The South: La Fabrique Cinéma de l’Institut français, developed in close collaboration with the Marché du Film in Cannes. This is a programme aimed at fostering young talent from predominantly French-speaking Southern countries. Multiple partnerships have been launched with Quebec, Reunion Island, South Africa, Central Africa and West Africa.

A range of different international collaborations

  • Japon > Shizuoaka: A partnership was agreed in 2018, in the field of Gastronomy. Every year, Shizuoka organises Shizuoka x Cannes Week focusing on French culture (Gastronomy, Art) and on Cannes itself with a selection of French films screened.
  • China > Sanya: A partnership was signed in 2019 to promote the two cities' international cultural influence by exchanging collections, creating a Festival of Pyrotechnic Art and providing Storytelling tuition
  • Canada > Shawinigan: An agreement was signed in 2019 to promote the two regions' creative industries. Following the closure of its hydroelectric plant, Shawinigan has been entirely re-energised, focusing on creative industries 
  • Côte d'Ivoire > Grand Bassam: A partnership set up to promote the heritage of the Ivorian city and create links in the field of Digital Technology

Innovative projects for sharing skills and culture

Promoting film-making in Africa

  • A Cannes-Dakar event is being organised for 2022 to promote Senegalese artists in Cannes across all fields (including filmmakers, writers, visual artists and academics). A Collaboration between the Ecole Internationale d'acteur de Dakar - EIAD and the Ecole Régionale d'Acteurs de Cannes around a joint creative project entitled "Poétiser le territoire"
  • Increased visibility of young talent and creativity to develop the African pavilion during the Festival de Cannes, in collaboration with the Agenda Culturelle Africaine (ACA)

Actively encouraging discussions between international festivals

  • Developing the "déjeuner des festivals internationaux" organised by the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs. Around sixty directors and overseas festival organisers are invited each year to meet and discuss their festivals' creative programmes, including those in Sarajevo, Cairo, Sofia, Busan, and Berlin.
  • Creating shows that can be taken to other cultural cities with a focus on international musicals. Artists from Mumbai's Taj Express will be welcomed to the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in 2023 to present their latest creation, "Bollywood Express".
