Cinema is deeply rooted in the city's history. The Festival de Cannes debuted in 1939 and has since become a world capital for cinema. After the Olympic Games, it is the most publicised event on earth (4,000 journalists from over 90 countries attend each year).

Cannes, institutional partner of the Festival de Cannes

Since 1946, Cannes, world capital of cinema and partner of the Festival de Cannes, hosts the most famous movie stars. For this prestigious event, the City of Cannes offers the organization the Palais des festivals et des congrès and public spaces.

Cannes, for major industry events

  • 1959: The international Marché du Film is affiliated to the Festival. This was the first industry event for the Seventh Art. No less than 4,000 films and projects have been presented to 12,500 participants from 121 countries and screened in 33 venues.

  • 1954: The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is established.

  • 1964: The Marché International des Programmes de Télévision (MIPTV) is launched. It offers industry professionals the possibility to buy and sell programmes globally and to negotiate with new streaming platforms.

  • 1985: The Marché International des Programmes de Communication (MIPCOM) is launched, a trade show for distributing audiovisual content and for seeking funding. 4,700 buyers from 110 different countries attend each year.

  • 2018: The international festival CANNESERIES is created, celebrating series from around the world. The festival is open to all and aims to bring together the best of the world of series, to showcase upcoming talent, and to create an unmissable international competition for series of all genres and all lengths.

Major events for everyone to enjoy

  • Festival de Cannes: 40,000 attendees per year, including 4,000 filmgoers from the general public. A pass is available for young adults aged 18 to 28 from all over the world to attend the Festival. Throughout the two-week event, "Cinéma de la Plage" offers film screenings on the beach to the general public.

  • Cannes Cinéphiles: This is a part of the Festival de Cannes open to the public and organised by the Cannes Cinéma association. Featuring 200 film screenings, Cannes Écrans Juniors also presents film previews to secondary school pupils from the region.

  • Festival CANNESERIES: Showcasing Series from countries worldwide with 25,000 visitors, including members of the general public, secondary school pupils from the region as well as 400 accredited journalists.

  • Rencontres cinématographiques de Cannes: Organised by the Cannes Cinéma association since 1988, these events include 111 sessions with film crews, masterclasses and workshops offered to around 12,000 secondary and high school pupils from the region.
