Public buildings and religious structures, remarkable for their architecture, bear witness to the history of Cannes, and fine homes and villas, some of which are listed below, evoke the great days of foreign patronage in the 19th century. Today, most are in joint ownership, surrounded by parks closed to the public.

National heritage open days
Organised under the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, the National Heritage Open Days are a chance for the public to get to know the wealth of the national and local heritage, be it buildings and architecture or plant life in parks and gardens.

| La Castre museum |
|
|
Located on the heights of Old Cannes, the mediaeval castle overlooks La Croisette, the Bay and the Isles of Lérins. Built towards the end of the 11th century to defend the emerging town, it has retained its keep, the Romanesque Sainte-Anne chapel and cisterns. The castle now houses Musée de la Castre, with its collection of art from Oceania, the Americas, the Himalayas, Mediterranean antiquities, Orientalist and Provençal paintings, as well as an exceptional series of musical instruments from all over the world.

La Mer museum |

|
Off the coast of Cannes, on the closest of the Isles of Lérins, the Fort overlooks the sea on the edge of the pine and eucalyptus forest. Built in the 17th and 18th centuries, it served as a State prison then, after the French Revolution, as a military prison. The Musée de la Mer in the Fort’s main building houses the ancient Roman cisterns, the cell in which the Man in the Iron Mask was kept, the Huguenot memorial, as well as collections of archaeological remains found in the sea (Roman and Saracen wrecks) and on land. It also features temporary exhibitions.

Villa Rothschild and gardens

|
Built in 1881 on the foundations of the former Villa Marie-Thérèse, where Lord Brougham lived, this neoclassical villa and its park are listed historic monuments. The gardens present a hundred or so valuable plant species of Mediterranean, Tropical and Asian origin.

La Malmaison

|
|
The building was part of the Grand Hôtel, on which construction began in 1863 under the supervision of the architects Vianey and Blondel. The Grand Hôtel was occupied until the end of the 1950s, demolished, then rebuilt in 1963. Formerly a gaming room and tearoom belonging to the Grand Hôtel, La Malmaison is the only pavilion that has survived from the initial complex. It houses temporary exhibitions organized by the City highlighting fine artists.

Park residences Champfleuri

First built at the end of the 19th Century, the villa has since been sumptuously reorganised - In the park, there is a Florentine garden leading to an Andalousian Patio, a Japonese garden, a Proveníal garden, a Dutch garden, a Maur garden - and an extremely impressive wealth of botanical species.

Château Vallombrosa and its park

The castle with its nine crenellated towers, was built in 1850 amidst a three-hectare tropical park - After considerable extensions, it became Hôtel du Parc in 1892 before being converted into a jointly-owned building - the former medieval-baroque style Château des Tours. The building and the park are both listed as Historical Monuments.

Notre-Dame de Lérins abbey

Construction began on the fortified monastery c. 1050, and continued for three centuries, while the Trinity Chapel was built in the 9th and 10th centuries. Today, the monastery is home to Cistercian monks who have been growing vine on the island since the 16th century.

Saint George's church
|
|
|
Built in 1887 and designed by English architect, M. Blomfield, this church has not changed at all. It is one of the best examples of English religious architecture.

Bellini chapel |
|
|
A baroque, Italian chapel from the end of the 19th century. There is a clock tower to house the belfry and the façade is decorated with patisseries and statues. Inside, the gallery is doted with a restored wooden staircase.

St. Marguerite island |
|
|
Sainte-Marguerite Island stands out because of its size and the variety of its biotope. Rare Mediterranean plants and migratory birds people shores lapped with translucent water where posidonia beds abound. The minute you disembark, you will be struck by the fragrance of pine and eucalyptus trees. The botanical track marked out by the National Forest Authority is the best way of threading your way along the island's meandering paths. To the west, you can admire the landscape from the Pointe du Dragon viewpoint, embracing a breathtaking panorama from Anthéor to Cannes. On the other side, one can contemplate Cap d'Antibes from Pointe de la Convention and its small fort, still standing after all these years.

Villa Domergue and gardens |

Villa and gardens were designed by artist, Jean-Gabriel Domergue, in the Venetian style. The most beautiful works of the artist adorn the walls of the villa and magnificent sculptures by his wife decorate the garden. The villa was inaugurated in 1936.

Architectural treasures along Boulevard Carnot |
|
|
In 1894, this major thoroughfare measuring no fewer than 26 metres wide and 2.6 kilometres long took the name boulevard Carnot, after the President of the Republic assassinated in Lyon. There are a number of fine buildings all along the boulevard, some in Haussmann style, others more eclectic, Art Nouveau or Art Deco in inspiration.

City hall

|
|
|
Finished in 1876 by the architect Louis Hourlier from Louis Durand's plans, the building crossed the times preserving its first aspect. From 1888, inner modifications were made. The hall, the wedding room, the main stairs and the mayor office are opened to visits.

Municipal archives
|
|
|
The Cannes municipal archives are housed on two separate sites, at 9 avenue Montrose in an elegant detached townhouse where all of the city’s historical archives are stored, from the Ancien Régime to the modern day. All the historical documents are freely consultable, as are the land use plans, town council minutes, parish registers, etc., as well as a variety of private collections. The documents come in all forms: letters, posters, maps, postcards, etc. The new Archive building (contemporary section) is located at 18 rue docteur Calmette. The temporary exhibition room is freely accessible, as are the computer terminals where users can consult the service’s image database as well as the restored city maps from 1884.

Anglican church
|
The Holy Trinity Church was built in 1874 and inaugurated on 17 December of the same year by the Reverend Lord Plumket. Like the three other Anglican churches in Cannes, this one was under the aegis of the Bishop of Gibraltar. The church is made up of a single nave with five spans and a polygonal chancel with a bell wall on the western façade, a porch and side chapel to the south, both with open gables, and a spire to the north. The building is embellished with its landscape garden.

Reformed church
|
The church was built in 1874 by the architect Vidal and was entirely rebuilt between 2004 and 2006 by the architect Millat, with new stained glass windows created by J. A. Ducater, master glassmaker from Salernes, and glass and metal doors on the façades.
